Alexis Avila of Prepped and Polished shares four strategies for test prep for students with non verbal learning disorder, such as using positive reinforcement, prepping early for exams, learning the test format, and discussing hidden meanings in reading passages.

Perspective taking

Perspective taking might be a pitfall that some of these students deal with and they get overwhelmed by the situation. As you can imagine, taking a three to three-and-a-half-hour test is an overwhelming experience, especially if you’re not prepared. So, ways to deal with this perspective-taking issue are calming them down and using positive reinforcement.

Emotional regulation

Another pitfall students with Non Verbal Learning Disorder may face is having some issues with emotional regulation and impulsivity. So, to overcome this, in our tutoring rooms, we have stress balls that they can squeeze just to let out some stress. We work on breathing exercises, and also, we really work on preparing early for exams so that they feel at ease when they walk on test day.
