I find that many students experience some common pitfalls that end up destroying their academic self-confidence. Hopefully, by recognizing some of these obstacles, you’ll be able to thrive both in school and in life.

I had a teacher who basically didn’t believe in me, didn’t like me, and marked my paper all in red ink. It’s not the criticism, but it was like the lack of giving me constructive feedback so I can get better on my papers, which is really important, so you want to feel that you can do a better job next time. Teachers can take away your you know morale.

Another thing is a poor support system. You are going home, the TV is blasting, and your parents are fighting, so you can’t concentrate. You need a support system that believes in education and believes in you doing better, and if you don’t have that, it could hurt your chances of getting better grades.

So right now, if you’re getting bad grades, you want to turn it around. Try to find a positive support system that will encourage you to do better and gravitate toward those good teachers who are inspiring.
